Widely
dispersed post offices, schools, and other services developed on the Alsace
Road, but no actual "Alsace" village ever developed, |

one looks at the long road as a community.

traveled by ox-cart from Muskoka to Lake Nipissing. |
|
There
he built a raft and floated his family and possessions across the lake to the
south-east bay. |
|
|
|
On
June 1, 1881, he opened a Post Office in his general store and named it after
his parents' Scottish birthplace of Callander. (* 7 *) |

The
first post office opened in 1877, when the area was known as Commanda Creek,
with Thomas Carr serving as postmaster.
The post office name was |
|
changed to Commanda in 1881. At some point
after this, as best we can piece the dates together, the post office was in
the Commanda general store. |
|
After postmaster Carr’s death in 1900, his
wife, Adeline Carr, was postmistress
until April 1905. Mr. and Mrs. David Watt ran the post office (* 8 *) |

Fossmill
was located on the north shore of the Wasi River, about 25 kilometres east of
Powassan. Robert Thompson established a depot site |
|
to
supply his camps in the area. The spot
was renamed Foster's Mill. In 1915, after the Canadian Northern Railway
(later CN) passed through. |
|
In
1924 the property was sold to Fassett Lumber and Fossmill and soon had a new
train station and the general store added a post office. (* 9 *) |

This post
office, which only operated from 1909 through 1915, was in the Mick General
Store. It opened in January 1909, with E. C. Mick as postmaster. |
|
Thomas
Anderson was postmaster in 1912 and 1913, and Peter Mick was the last
postmaster, holding the position from 1914 until the post office’s closure on
31 December 1915. |
Many small
post offices closed with the advent of rural mail delivery; the Genesee
Rapids post office was no exception.

Huron
County native Barnard Fagan named this place in 1878 when he called to
friends from a hilltop that he was seeing the 'golden valley |
|
ablaze with the golden colours of
autunm.' When the post office opened
in 1888 the community was given the name Golden Valley. (* 10 *) |
